In order for a story about magic to have an impact on its audience, we obviously need Hollywood level special effects and an eight million dollar budget involved, right?  False.  I know this because I just saw Shakespeare/Summerfest’s production of The Tempest, and while I will not presume to make statements about their budget, I can say that while I initially considered magic and special effects necessary to make this story enjoyable, I have now been otherwise educated through this more spiritual take on the material. I’ve given it some real consideration, and I think everyone should try to see a comedy semi-regularly –something fun and lighthearted.  If it’s a musical then go ahead and consider that a bonus.  The world is overflowing with dark and edgy stories about tragedy and pain, so for gosh sake LIGHTEN UP! One way to do that would be to see the Gem Theater’s current production of The Wedding Singer. Continue Reading

AMB Theatre Podcast #50 presented by OCR : Always Patsy Cline @ The Gem Theatre in Garden Grove – Podcast

Always…Patsy Cline is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Houston housewife Louise Seger. Having first heard Cline on the “Arthur Godfrey Show” in 1957, Seger became an immediate and avid fan. A chance meeting at Patsy’s concert started a friendship that lasted until Cline’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963. Taken from the Website

DCMS productions presents Urinetown @ The Gem Theatre in Garden Grove – Review

Written by Alina Mae Wilson

It’s time to welcome a new theater company to the Orange County area.  DCMS (Don’t Cut My Song) Productions has come to town, and they’ve set up shop for their first show over at the Gem Theatre in Garden Grove.   Considering the fact that just last week I was writing about a company leaving Orange County, it’s comforting to see some new groups sidling in to keep our community’s theater culture up and running.  New companies bring new experiences, as DCMS’s production of Urinetown at the Gem Theater demonstrates.  It’s an eye catching show with beautiful costumes and appealing set pieces bountifully sliding across the floor, but some of the main characters needed a bit more polish and energy before going onto the stage. Funny Girl In Concert At The Gem Theater – Review

Written by Mike Martin

The Gem Theater’s production of Funny Girl has a lot going for it. It is fast paced, well-executed, sounds nice, and looks nice. It’s also good to see a production of this particular show, which doesn’t get produced very often and has a lot going for it in terms of music and script. I watched it on Valentine’s Day, and the show seemed to hit every note save one. The audience certainly enjoyed themselves, and all-in-all, Funny Girl is another feather in the cap of the Gem, which has quietly made a name for itself as one of the very best in Orange County at producing musical theater.
