Former Hunger Artist Jeremy Gable Remembers His Directorial Debut in Fullerton

“10 years ago, I made my directorial debut. I was not a director back then. (Hell, I’m still not one now.) But when I read Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis, for the first time in my life, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. I’m grateful the amazing people at the now-defunct Hunger Artists Theatre Company in Fullerton, California took a chance and let some 23-year-old who had only been with the company for a year-and-a-half stage this brutal, uncompromising piece. I’m grateful for the talented team of women (Chrissie Munich, Brey Ann Barrett, Joy Chessmar-Bice, Mar McGurr, Biancha Adair, Christina Covarrubias) who helped shape the look and sound of the show, got my crazy ideas to the stage, and put up with a guy who literally knew nothing about directing or design.

And I’m absolutely grateful for Jessica Lamprinos, who had the unenviable task of carrying the entire, terrifying work on her shoulders. She rose to the challenge and threw herself completely into the role: breaking tables, ripping notebooks, and actually pulling out her hair. She invested every part of herself, exploding the tiny space with rage and vulnerability. It is –to this day –one of the greatest stage performances I’ve ever seen. Anywhere.

That show was one of the proudest and most satisfying moments in my theatrical career, and I thank everyone who helped make it happen.” —
