The Hunchback of Notre Dame @ La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts – Review

Written by Alina Mae Wilson

If you have been longing for a bit of Disney without the Disney feel, your time has finally come.  The Hunchback of Notre Dame is playing over at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts.  Based more closely on the plot from Victor Hugo’s markedly more sinister novel, this tale of the famed bell-ringer incorporates music from the 1996 Disney film to create a mesh of political intrigue and romance that promises to capture the spirit of the movie and pain from the novel but does not fully deliver on either front. There is something comforting about knowing you are about to hear a story with magic.  Fairy tales are a huge part of our culture, and some of them are more engrained in the collective Bank of Childhood Memories than others.  This can be attributed to the might of one Walt Disney.  Disney took already famed tales and made them even more mainstream, doing various touch ups here and there on his scripts to make them more appealing in cartoon form.  Pinocchio is one of these stories.  Most people know all about the wooden puppet who longs to be a real boy and his devoted companion Jiminy Cricket.  So it would be nothing short of weird to hear our beloved marionette and his friends curse (as this is an adult production) and make sexual references (again, this is an ADULT PRODUCTION. Written by Daniella Litvak

When I was a kid, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and numerous adaptations gave me nightmares. So I’m not surprised Wonderland and its inhabitants inspired many other artists towards darker interpretations. Even if an Alice story is targeted directly towards children, the creator’s intent doesn’t always come across and could end up creating something terrifying. However, if you are looking for a truly family friendly version of Alice in Wonderland, look no further than the Rose Center Theater. Continue Reading

Disney’s The Lion King @ Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa – Review

Written by Alina Mae Wilson

Right before Segerstrom Theater’s curtain rose for Disney’s famed stage classic The Lion King, the suspense was palpable.  Why wouldn’t it be?  In 1994 the Disney film of the same name shattered records as the highest-grossing animated feature of all time.  It debuted as a Broadway musical in 1997 and in 1998 was nominated for and won a myriad of Tony Awards –including Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design.  With over a decade of historic nostalgia preceding it, the current touring company is doubly pressed to turn out a great performance for lovers of both the movie and the original Broadway show.  How does this production measure up?  The answer is pretty well.
