In 2002, Dael Orlandersmith’s play, Yellowman, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.  It’s understandable. As far as categories are concerned, Yellowman could not be considered anything else. With only two actors playing an entire cast of distinct and lively characters, this play is chock-full of opportunities for the chosen pair to showcase their talents.  And the cast of Chance Theater’s production certainly showcase their talents. Masterfully directed by Khanisha Foster and passionately performed by Julanne Chidi Hill (Alma + ensemble) and Dante Alexander (Eugene + ensemble), Yellowman is a vicious exploration of self-hate within Black America and an attempt at love by two of its children.

I went to Super Antojitos in Tustin a little early to eat something before the show started. Super Antojitos is not a theater venue that happens to serve food or a restaurant that also puts on shows. It is a Mexican restaurant, and it continues to be a Mexican restaurant while the show is performed. The show is performed in the back of the restaurant, so be sure to find a seat there to get the best view of the show. The Costa Mesa Playhouse presents Silent Sky. A historical fiction by Lauren Gunderson, Silent Sky imagines the personal and professional life of iconic American astronomer Henrietta Leavitt. Stacked with a charming cast and a starry background that evokes feelings of solemnity, Silent Sky should be considered a competent story but not necessarily an entertaining one.
