Phantom Projects Theatre Group Takes Over Historic La Habra Depot Theatre

From a press release:

The historic La Habra Depot Theatre will re-open under the new management of the La Mirada-based Phantom Projects Theatre Group.  The theatre group, which has been presenting theatrical productions at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, has been awarded a five-year lease to manage and program the historic venue owned by the City of La Habra. The 132 seat venue will be renamed The Phantom Projects Theatre at La Habra Depot. The theatre has been dark since February of 2020 when it was vacated by its previous tenants.  The new theatre is not a replacement, but an expansion Phantom Projects’ current operations at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. The synopsis for I & You by Lauren Gunderson taken from playscripts.com

“One afternoon, Anthony arrives unexpectedly at classmate Caroline’s door bearing a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, an urgent assignment from their English teacher. Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasn’t been to school in months, but she is as quick and sardonic as Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular. As these two let down their guards and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane poetry project unlocks a much deeper mystery that has brought them together.” Continue Reading

A Message from the Mysterium Theatre:

“Two years ago, we moved to this wonderful historic building and we are doing renovations and putting on between 15-21 shows each season.  We just got hit with some pretty big expenses and the rights to several shows coming up are larger than we had hoped.  We have some fantastic folks both on and off stage that have come along for the adventure of creating art that the community desperately needs.  We are also developing an after school program to have the future generation fall in love and participate in the arts – singing, dancing, acting on set, lighting design and much more.  At the moment we need an immediate 2,500.00.” Taken from the website

Set during the early twentieth century, The Music Man is about what happens when traveling salesman Harold Hill (Ray Buffer) comes to River City, Iowa. Harold is the titular character because he sells boys marching bands: the instruments, the uniforms, the lessons, and so on. He guarantees a marching band will keep River City happy and out of trouble. While most of the people fall under Harold’s spell and become wildly enthusiastic about a marching band, librarian/music teacher Marian Paroo (Mallory Staley) doubts the purity of Harold’s intentions. Still she cannot ignore the effect Harold is having on River City or her changing feelings towards the man himself. Continue Reading
