Legally Blonde, the musical, at the Westminster Playhouse in Westminster, May 15 – June 7, 2026.
Elle Woods (Sammy Spiegler) is back, baby, and she’s bringing Bruiser, the talented Holly Golightly, the Chihuahua, with her. This time, they’re hitting up the Westminster Playhouse, which has served the Westminster area since 1961. This community theatre is located in the beautiful city of Westminster and is known for having one of the largest Vietnamese communities outside of Vietnam. The city also, in my opinion, has some bomb egg rolls. OMG, I’m thinking about them now! Anyway, this is a theatre review, so back to the show.
Legally Blonde, the musical, at Westminster Playhouse is directed by Dan Blackley. It’s stylish, full of pizzazz, and set up like a long pep rally that never seems to end. The unique U-Shaped stage at the playhouse and the large open floor complemented the intimate, cheerleader-esque nature of the music and the overall vibe. It was an entrancing combination.
Story:
Legally Blonde is the story of Elle Woods, a popular girly girl and head of her sorority at UCLA, with a degree in Fashion Merchandising. When her boyfriend Warner (Garrett Claud) decides she’s not serious enough. The breakup inspires Elle to win him back by getting into law school. What she learns along the way is so much better than what some guy offers, but what she can offer herself.
Chemical Leak:
As you may already know, there was a chemical leak affecting many areas of Orange County. Here’s a link with information about it from the LA Times. Something to be aware of if you are planning a trip to the Westminster Community Playhouse. My trip to Westminster on my review date took longer than usual because many freeway exits were blocked. I ended up taking the streets from Seal Beach to make it. However, I’m glad I did because this show was great! I am of the opinion that not everything under the sun that was once popular needs to be turned into a musical. But sometimes money talks, and it doesn’t matter what I think. This is not always the case.
I think Legally Blonde the musical stands on its own. Even if it was original material, I think it would have stood on its own. The bright pop sensibilities suited its unique underdog story. At the same time, its message is limited because the lead, despite their struggles, has a certain level of privilege. The quote, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog,” seems particularly germane to this play, given that a Chihuahua is the popular dog featured in the musical. In a special way, the musical is saying, no matter where you come from, your character does matter, so even though there will be people who treat you unfairly, keep on fighting anyway.
Direction/Choreography:
Conceptually, I really dug the energy and direction from Dan Blackley, and the choreography from Joanna Tsang-Segelson really helped tie everything together. With such a hefty ensemble, the space felt active and fun in just the right moments.
The most noticeable issues are singing and musical balance issues with the pre-recorded track. Some singers are better at cutting through the mix. Others are more timid. But as far as the actual tone of the vocals, not a bad note on my night. I was listening intently.
The set design by Dan Blackley was not only functional for the musical but also stylish. The pink-and-white color scheme made it really stand out as uniquely Elle. And why not? This is a musical about Elle and being who she is, no matter what.
Acting:
Sammy Spiegler (Elle Woods) had a good grasp of the character’s physicality, and her vocals were well-suited to the material. Spiegler really shone during the tunes “So Much Better,” “Gay or European,” and “Positive,” to name a few. I appreciated that she could project throughout the playhouse and also communicated her state of mind, even when not the focus of the scene.
Mallory Kerwin (Paulette) showed off very strong vocal chops and a comedic presence, making her a good fit for the role.
Is Holly Golightly (Bruiser Woods) small? Yes. Is her part tiny in the show? Also, yes. Holly’s got star power and made the part her own. What more can I say? Excited to see what she comes up with next. Say hi to Cat for me.
Tom Proprofsky as Callahan is excellent as well.
Chase Slovak as Kyle brings confidence as the deliveryman with Swagger. No one on the block had swagger like that in a UPS uniform!
WOW!! This was a great production and I loved seeing it with my family LOL It was super funny and…
