The interesting thing about the theater is that, although so many new stories are being enjoyed, there’s always room to honor the shows that have paved the way.
The iconic Broadway classic Evita has come to Orange County, courtesy of One More Productions at The GEM Theater in Garden Grove. The dazzling cast and fine-tuned orchestra, led by Damien Lorton, take on Andrew Loyd Webber’s eclectic award-winner with gusto and showmanship. A combination of intricate lighting, succinct choreography, and the sheer talent of the company overall creates an exciting and memorable evening of musical theater.
Story:
Making its Broadway premiere in 1979, Evita is the retelling of the life of Eva Perón, one of Argentina’s most influential cultural leaders. Coming from humble beginnings, Eva dreams of a better life in Buenos Aires, where she can pursue her dreams of becoming a radio, stage, and film actress. After finding love with a rising political star, she quickly becomes Argentina’s adored first lady in a time of social and economic change. Eva’s unlikely rise to influence throughout a system of political upheaval is an inspiring message that continues to resonate well in today’s landscape of culture and activism.
Acting:
Giovanna Martinez is enchanting as Eva and is not only a strong leading force within the cast but also a spectacular vocalist as she delivers the show’s iconic showstoppers. She carries herself with grace yet ferocity while commanding every scene and demonstrates a mastery of the musical and dance numbers. In her captivating performances of “You Must Love Me” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” it can not be overstated how stunning Martinez is.
Playing the role of Che is Aaron Gibbs, whose energy and enthusiasm are a delight whenever featured in the show. Che serves as a stand-in for the people of Argentina and helps to narrate the plot of Eva’s rise to social and political prowess. Throughout the performance, Gibbs is charming and a non-stop force of talent. His striking facial expressions build tension and passion as he portrays the show’s primary voice of truth and accountability.
Surrounding these principle characters is a well-versed ensemble of actors and dancers who create the various people of Argentina looking to either support or stymie Eva’s endeavors. They each manage to show wide-ranging characterization as well as impression skills in vocals and dance. Choreography by Angela Mattern, Erik Diaz, Edvan Galvan, and Julia Kacopetti is exhilarating and seemingly carried out easily.
Designers/Live Band:
The powerhouse of talent in this performance is well-displayed by the production’s skilled designers and behind-the-scenes talent. Webber’s Tony-winning score is masterfully performed by live musicians with support from sound designer and producer Dan Baird. Finishing off the overall energy of the performance is the lighting by Jeremy Huff, which uses a variety of hues and presentations to make for some excellent theatrical drama.
Overall:
This story of empowerment, fortitude, and all of this theatrical magic can be seen at The GEM Theater through July 14.
