Fullerton, Calif.— The Maverick Theater begins its 2025 season with the stage adaptation of the Academy Award winning Best Picture “Shakespeare in Love”, directed by Brian Newell. Adapted to the stage by Lee Hall from the screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard. “Shakespeare in Love” delivers a delightfully crowd-pleasing, deeply romantic, and highly adventurous tale of love and drama in Renaissance-era England.
Young playwright William Shakespeare struggles with writer’s block on his latest comedy “Romeo and Ethel the Pirate’s Daughter”. Hope is lost until his greatest fan, the young wealthy Viola De Lesseps, dresses up as a boy and auditions for the part of Romeo.
Viola constantly dreams of becoming an actress but the law forbids women from performing in plays. When Viola is told she will be married to the cold-hearted Lord Wessex she hatches her plan. Shakespeare soon sees through her disguise and they begin a love affair, one they know cannot end happily. Their romance provides rich inspiration for Shakespeare and ultimately turns his comedy into the romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juilet.
“Shakespeare in Love” opens February 7th and runs through March 16th. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., Sundays at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $39.50 general, $21.50 for students with a current I.D. Tickets may be purchased online at www.mavericktheater.com or by calling 714-526-7070. The Maverick Theater is located at 110 E. Walnut, Fullerton, CA 92832, across from the Amtrak station in historic Downtown Fullerton.
